The Plan: Evan originally planned on proposing to Alex on the dock before getting onto the boat. I had scoped the area in advance and had been in touch with Evan as to exactly which boat it was so I knew where to stand. After proposing, they would go on a 3 or 4 hour boat ride around Miami.

How It Went Down: I arrived at the marina in Brickell next to the Four Ambassadors a little early and after speaking with the boat captain, he suggested that Evan propose on the boat itself instead of the dock. It was a Catamaran and there was a small flat area where he would be able to get on one knee. He got in touch with Evan who agreed to the new plan. I was going to pretend to be the captain’s first mate so she wouldn’t be suspicious.

I took off my shoes and socks, rolled up my jeans and discreetly placed my camera bag on the side. Alex and Evan arrived, and just as we planned, the captain introduced himself and then introduced me as his first mate. Evan had the captain hook his phone up through bluetooth so he could begin playing one of their favorite songs, Frankie Valli’s Can’t take my eyes off of you, from one of her favorite movies, 10 Things I Hate About You (see the Youtube clip of Heath Ledger singing the song to Julia Stiles). Evan got down on one knee to Alex’s complete shock – she had no idea. She said yes, and he placed the ring on her finger.

We took off on the boat for 20 minutes or so to get some photos out on the water, and then came back to shore to drop me off so they could continue on their boat ride. It was an amazing moment to capture and I’m so grateful I was able to witness and document their special day!
