1 Year Old Birthday Cake Smash in Miami!

She wanted to make sure she documented her daughter’s first birthday milestone. Life is too short, and before we know it, kids are 5, 10, 20 years old. You know that feeling when you stumble upon an old photo and you completely forgot that they ever looked like that?! The photos that show the relationship we had with a loved one are the ones I treasure most. And so I adore the photos from this session that show some hilarious moments with her mom and dad.

Her parents brought along a few outfit changes, balloons (that sadly flew away), and a gorgeous cake from Cake Lounge in Coral Gables. We started off with some family photos until their daughter began to warm up (she was shy in the beginning but that didn’t last too long!). They changed her into an adorable bikini and her dad began to play some music on his phone. She had us laughing so hard with her crazy-cute dance moves.

As the sun began to set, it was time for the cake smash. They had a crown for her that she quickly took off (all too common :), and then they placed the cake in front of her. What was so funny is that we were all expecting her to dive right in and begin devouring it…. but noooo instead she was wondering what is this?!

She took off the decorative “One” and then dipped her fingers in. Her parents were cheering her on to eat it! But the dirty, sticky fingers were just too much. She began crying so her parents went over to console her and show her and delicious it was lol! She instead she began to happily feed it to her parents instead 🙂

This First Birthday Cake Smash session in Miami took place at South Pointe Park in South Beach, Florida before sunset. Read Everything you should know about Smash Cakes.

Some Cake Smash Tips to prepare for your session:

  1. Bring along a “nice” outfit plus another outfit that you don’t mind getting covered in cake (or let them go naked!)
  2. Feel free to bring along extra decorations (balloons with a weight, a blanket, etc.)
  3. Leave the cake smashing for the end of the session 🙂

It had been a little while since I had been to the Fontainebleau. I’ve met many families and couples there over the years, usually taking photos by the beach. This particular day it was quite windy outside, especially by the beach. This family was more than happy to stay on the grounds of the Fontainebleau where it was less windy. The pool area was mostly empty and there was a huge space to work with to get different backdrops.

What I particularly enjoyed was photographing their two daughters. The oldest is wise beyond her years, and kept me intrigued talking about her passions and what she is pursuing in college. I look forward to seeing her conquer the world with her intelligence and ambition. Her younger sister is extremely mature and one of the most confident seven-year-old I’ve ever met. She struck her own poses and instead of giving me a cheesy smile, she would gaze seriously at the camera.

The grandparents joined us in the middle of the session and everyone was thrilled to see them. It was especially heartwarming to see the closeness that the grandchildren have with their grandparents. Documenting the relationships between people is what remains most important to me and what makes the photos more interesting and meaningful to the people in them.

This photo session took place at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach before sunset. See a list I’ve compiled of some of my favorite spots for a photo session in Miami.

Miami Family and Wedding Photos at Sunrise in South Beach

This lovely family from Norrbotten, Sweden (now added to my bucket list 🙂 ) – contacted me about booking a photo session on the beach. They recently got married and wanted to wear their wedding clothes. I love what they wore, especially the addition of the flowers and floral headpieces. Their children were so sweet and friendly! What surprised me most was that they were willing to do every idea I threw at them. (The parents mentioned to me that they told them to behave beforehand ha!)

They are such an endearing, warm and kind family. Sunrise on the beach worked out really well. The sun was out, the beach was sparse, and the headbands helped keep the wind out of their faces. After spending some time by the water, we headed into the shade of the greenery. I got some really adorable photos of the children being super sweet together.

I adore the black and white family photo where they are all laughing and the individual portraits of each child. The youngest was suddenly in a giggly mood at the end of the session and was having so much fun hopping toward me. Hence the authentic smile in the last photo 🙂
