Loews Miami Beach Sunrise Family Photo Session

I met this delightful family for a sunrise session at the beach behind the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. It was the coldest day of the year in Miami, around 45 degrees fahrenheit which for us Miamians is FREEZING lol. But with the sun shining it was actually pleasant and honestly a nice break from the hot summer months – actually more like year-round summer weather (not complaining ha).

This family was so much fun to work with. We laughed throughout the session and the time really flew by. And I don’t think you would know how cold it was from the expressions¬†on their faces ūüôā

Family Photo Session: Coral Gables Prado Entrance

I had such a great time photographing this family! We met at one of my favorite spots called the Coral Gables Prado Entrance. It’s not a very large area but I find that there are quite a few different spots to use that even spending an hour here you can get different backgrounds.

Their kids were a little shy at first, especially their son. But it wasn’t before long that he completely warmed up and was such a personality. Their daughter would look at me and give me a great gaze, peering directly at the camera.

After taking a few family portraits and some of just the kids together, we let them be. They loved running around and playing hide-and-seek. We ended the session with the parents playing with their kids, throwing them in the air and spinning them around. This equals pure joy on the kids faces, my favorite kind of photos.

If you are looking for a unique location with a mix of architecture and greenery (this place has great coral arches and¬†decaying fountains that are still beautiful), this place would be it. It’s a great place for couples, maternity or family sessions. I also photographed one of my favorite¬†sets of business portraits / business headshots at this spot. You can check out all the photo sessions I have taken at the Coral Gables Prado Entrance. The light is beautiful here in the late morning, a couple of hours after sunrise, or in the afternoon just a few hours before sunset.

Erin contacted me about setting up a beach photo session to capture the love they share and the memories they’ve made together as a family. Even though they didn’t plan for it in advance, somehow they had the perfect wardrobe wearing white, cream, light blue and pink which stood out well against the blue of the water (see¬†ideas for what to wear to a session). ¬†They couldn’t have been more fun and easy to work with. As a photographer, you can suggest ideas and poses but you need the connection and love between people for magic to happen. The ones of them laughing are some of my favorites ūüôā

They were also extremely flexible with the timing of the session. Some days can be cloudy with less light to work with, while this particular day was very sunny so I asked them if they were okay with postponing it to a bit later to get the golden light (and less squinting!) which they quickly agreed to. We managed to finish the session just as the sun was setting.

For this photo session, we met up at the beach behind the 1 Hotel South Beach. Because lots of the buildings along Collins Avenue can block the sun, I try to head to areas in between the buildings where the light comes through. We found a spot close-by on the beach which worked perfectly.
