This family photo session was centered around an energetic, rambunctious and very adorable toddler. The initial plan was to photograph on the beach behind their hotel – the 1 Hotel South Beach.

When I got there, they wondered if we could also photograph in and around the hotel. I was glad they mentioned it, because the hotel had several different backdrops with beautiful lighting. It adds an extra element to the photographs once you get to incorporate different textures, lighting and backgrounds. It also helps to keep the energy of the session moving by going to different spots, especially with a kid that doesn’t want to sit still!

Everyone was completely involved and wrapped up in the boy’s antics. At the beach he took off running, quite happy to let off some steam. Why sit still for a family photograph when you can run and have everyone chase after you? Much more fun.

Check out all of the photo sessions at the 1 Hotel South Beach. You can also look at the family photo shoots. You can see how well white photographs in photos – it’s clean, simple and photographs well against most backgrounds. For more ideas on what to wear to a session, check out this Pinterest board for inspiration. When it doubt, just wear what’s most flattering and comfortable. You want to feel great in what you’re wearing. Don’t stress out too much about it! The photos are about so much more than what you are wearing.

The 1 Hotel South Beach was a great and convenient location. Often, the best spot with kids are is the one closest to you. Otherwise, you can check out this list of locations in Miami for a photo shoot. It has some of my favorite spots to take pictures in the city.

So grateful I was able to photograph this Cuban-American family. The great-grandparents are just the sweetest couple, and every one in this extended family just radiated kindness and warmth. We met at South Pointe Park for a sunrise session. We took a variety of photos: the entire family together, each individual family, all the cousins together.. and my very favorite set of images, one of the grandson’s dancing with his grandmother. It was one of those rare moments where an entire family gets together, so getting to photograph them together was a special event.

Check out all of the extended family photo sessions on the blog and all of the family photo shoots. A big thank you to Manuel for the review he left me on Google after the session:

Exceeded my expectations! Absolutely gorgeous photos, great at communication and I could not be more happy with the results. I found Tova from a google search and I would highly recommend to anyone!

If you need ideas on what to wear to a family photo shoot, this Pinterest board has ideas for what to wear. White photographs really well on the beach, as you can see from this photo session. All white, white + khaki, white + jeans (except in the warm months), are easy to coordinate colors with a large, extended family and it looks good on the beach and by the greenery. You can also change it up by everyone wearing different colors (a mix of whites, blues, pinks, etc.). I think it’s best for everyone to feel comfortable in what they’re wearing, so wearing different colored outfits is fine, too!

It was beautiful “winter” day in December when I met this family at the historic Deering Estate. Their son is graduating from high school and needed senior photos, so that was the main focus of the session. They also wanted to jump in for a few photos to get some family pictures of the entire family for Christmas.

We really couldn’t have lucked with better weather. We initially planned on meeting in the morning around 10-11am but ended up meeting at 1:30pm instead. The beauty of a place like the Deering Estate is that you can photograph mid-day when the sun is usually way too bright and harsh in open areas like the beach, but works really well at the estate since there is plenty of shade. There’s also so many backgrounds and locations to use. There’s a mango orchard in the front, several historic structures that make for a wonderful backdrop for photos, and it’s located on the water by the Biscayne Bay.

The Deering Estate charges a $100 + tax permit fee to photograph there (includes up to 4 people, additional guests have to pay the regular admission fee) but I think it is worth it (in comparison, Vizcaya charges a $160 and $267 permit fee for weekday/weekends as of today, March 2019.) You can read about the Deering Estate’s history on their website.

So grateful I got to work with this wonderfully sweet, kind family. They left me this super kind review after their photo session:

From identifying the best locations for a family photo session, capturing the true personalities of each family member, expeditiously processing and returning our photos, to delivering an amazing collection of pictures that we’ll cherish forever; Tova provided outstanding service at a great value.
