A couple of years ago I photographed this family and their two boys at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens. It was a cool February morning and the boys were wearing sweaters to stay warm. This year we headed to Vizcaya to photograph in their beautiful gardens. It was a warm day in March, and I met their newest addition, an adorable little boy! Their kids are always extremely sweet and I absolutely adore spending time with this family.
This Vizcaya Museum Gardens Family Photography session took place in the morning at the beautiful Vizcaya. A photo permit is required to photograph there. If you’re looking for a beautiful backdrop for your photo session, it’s a worthwhile splurge.
This Vizcaya Proposal and Engagement Photography session was pretty special. They met at medical school and became best friends since.
The plan: We were going to take a “just because” couple session (this was during the holidays, the day before New Year’s) at one of my favorite places to photograph, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. He told me he often did silly magic tricks on her at home, so he would plan another one the day of the session.
The day of the shoot: We spent our time roaming around the beautiful gardens at Vizcaya on Sunday morning. There are elegant stairwells, archways, and Italian and French 17th and 18th century styled gardens that are perfect for couple or engagement sessions. Finally, we made it to the Tea house. He gave her a handful of red rose petals, told her to close her eyes, and said that after she threw them in the air he would magically have them transform back into their original form. The magic appeared instead in the form of a ring. There he was on one knee, the two of them surrounded by rose petals, overcome with emotion. She said yes, they kissed, and reveled in giddy smiles, her hand now adorned with a diamond ring.
The soon-to-be bride’s best friend called me: she wanted to help arrange a surprise proposal! We talked about doing it at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. The logistics were simple: wait on a bench outside the “Tea House” located behind the museum. Follow the couple into the Tea House and capture their proposal! Everything went according to plan. What was so funny though was that Melanie knew it was coming. Some girls just know ha. But it didn’t make the moment any less special.
Wandering around Vizcaya was incredible, as always. Each spot offers another unique background. To quote from Vizcaya’s website: “Vizcaya’s European-inspired gardens are among the most elaborate in the United States. Reminiscent of gardens created in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Italy and France, the overall landscape design is conceived as a series of rooms.”
When we finished up the session, Melanie facetimed her best friend (the one who helped plan everything), and she was in tears. She was dying to know how it all turned out! I was finally able to meet her too, albeit via the internet 🙂 Congratulations Melanie and Marcus!! Wishing you a lifetime filled with lots of love, laughter and happiness.
