Will arranged with The Palms Hotel and Spa in Miami Beach to set up a table with champagne and two glasses. In the afternoon before sunset, he and Jessie walked out the back of the hotel onto the beach. I was waiting on the beach walk nearby and followed them from a distance. As they approached the water he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. They toasted afterwards with the champagne and I took some photos of them together and one of my favorite photos – a close-up photo of their hands showing the new engagement ring on her finger. Congratulations Jessie and Will, so happy for both of you!!

He wanted to propose at South Pointe Park in the afternoon before attending a concert later that evening. Him being from Australia and her from the US, they met each other while traveling and took an immediate liking to each other. A few years later and here they were in Miami Beach traveling once again, except now he was going to ask her to marry him. I followed them as they walked along the pathway that leads to the beach. He led her onto the rocky pier and got down on one knee. She said yes!! I love her reactions, her hand placed over her mouth in shock as she repeatedly hugged and kissed him and joyously looked at the newness of the engagement ring that now adorned her finger.

Suggestions for planning a surprise proposal:

  1. Get a Ring Stash. Concerned that she’ll notice the large box bulging in your pocket? At one of the surprise proposals that I photographed, one of the guys mentioned that he used something called a Ring Stash. It’s basically a much thinner ring box that is easy to keep discreet.
  2. Schedule the proposal during daylight hours. Nighttime makes it very difficult to capture the moment (not exactly the best time to be using a flash in someone’s face!). Anytime between sunrise-sunset works well to achieve high quality photos. You can propose before dinner, after watching the sunrise on the beach, etc.
  3. Have her dress up or down for the occasion, depending on her style. Is she going to want to be wearing make-up and be dressed up for the photos? Or is she ok with being dressed casual? You can always create an excuse to have her get dressed up (i.e. going to dinner after going for a walk by the beach) but remember you’ll probably both be barefoot if you go onto the beach.

Rodney contacted me about planning a surprise proposal for his girlfriend. We decided to meet at South Pointe Park. They spent some time in Little Havana and then took an uber to the park. I sat on a bench nervously waiting for them. He sent me a photo in advance so I knew who to look for, and he also texted me a description of their outfits. It was a weekend and South Pointe was bustling. When I saw them pass by me, I followed from a distance as they walked toward the beach. Since the beach itself was full of people, Rodney walked with her onto the rocks overlooking the water. I followed about 15 feet behind them. Milly looked around her to see if someone was around to take their photograph. Trying to be discreet, I pretended to photograph the view. Since no one else was around, Milly approached me: do you mind taking a photo of us? Little did she know that just minutes later Rodney would be proposing to her. She had no idea and was completely in shock and emotional. Meanwhile, everyone around us started cheering and clapping. It was a special moment.

The story doesn’t end there. A week after I posted their proposal photo on Instagram, I was contacted by Martha Stewart Weddings asking me if they could feature the photo for a proposal story they were working on. We were all pretty stoked about it. You can see their photo featured here: 27 Perfect Proposal Stories You Need To Read.
