This post is meant to serve as inspiration and a starting point for where to begin selecting outfits for your photo session. There is no absolute right or wrong; everyone has their own style and what they feel they look good in. For a visual album with just photos, take a look at my Pinterest Board of What to wear to a photo shoot.
I put together some photos below from past sessions as examples of what to wear, it is divided into: Complementary Colors; Matching Outfits; Adding Color Accents and Final Tips.
1. Complementary Colors Notice how each person is wearing a different color outfit yet the tones complement each other; this is a great way of adding color to a photo. Wearing different outfits also highlights each person’s unique personality.
2. Matching Outfits Whereas coordinated outfits shows each individual’s personality, wearing the same outfit unifies a family and is timeless and classic. Wearing all white, white+khaki or white+jean will look great both on the beach and against greenery.
Notice how the bold pink color really stands out from the green background:
3. Adding Color Accents
Adding pops of color through a colorful headband, jewelry, vest, hat, shoes, etc.
can help bring an added color dimension to photos:
4. Final Tips
Be yourself. Always wear outfits that you feel comfortable in and that are a reflection of you own sense of style and personality. Feel free to bring a second outfit along for a different look mid-session. Please don’t stress about what to wear; the most important thing is for everyone in the family to be well-rested and have fun at the photo shoot!
