They wanted a fairly private area to propose, and the arch by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is a great spot for that.
The plan: I’d be waiting near the arch. As the couple approached, I’d introduce myself as a student photographer and ask if I could take a few photos of the two of them to test the lighting. When I said something like “Let me get one more,” that was his cue to propose.
How it went down: The plan went perfectly thankfully! I did let him know about several things before such as – wear mosquito repellant (it was height of the summer)/ cover up as much as possible – this area of the garden specifically was full of mosquitoes (although they seemed to like me much more than them haha). She had NO idea and was completely surprised. I really like when I can set people up because that way if I need to shift people over to center them or for lighting purposes, I can do so. Plus we were able to maintain the surprise element, so that was great. We then walked around to different areas of the garden to capture engagement-style photos.
