The mom reached out to me wanting to schedule an at-home family session with their newborn. I love at home sessions with young kids. There’s such an easiness to it. When we go to a new spot, it can take a little bit of time for some kids to warm up. However at home, kids are already themselves. Everyone feels more at ease. The only prep is really cleaning up spaces that have good window light.
I adore window light. It’s not harsh like the sun can be; it’s a very soft, flattering light. Toddlers can easily get distracted outside – wanting to run around (which can be its own sort of fun!), but it can also be exhausting for parents.
The nice thing about at home sessions are also having AC – especially in Miami! The only thing to keep in mind is that you do want to have spaces with indoor light. I’m not fond of having flashes constantly fire if there isn’t good natural light – especially when it comes to newborns.
I love sessions like this where there is gentle guidance – on angling a certain way, posing, etc. Sometimes I think about how wonderful it would be to capture a purely documentary style photo shoot with kids. Think – capturing them as they are at home – playing, crying, interacting with their siblings, etc. Some of my favorite photos of my nieces and nephews were just capturing them naturally interact with their parents and grandparents – without any direction from me. If that’s something you’d be interested in – please reach out and let me know.
If you’re expecting or have recently welcomed a new baby and are based in or visiting the Miami or Coral Gables area, I’d love to come to you. In-home newborn sessions are available throughout South Florida. You can reach out through the contact page to start planning yours.
