This was my third post-quarantine job. I was excited to photograph a surprise proposal at the beautiful Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. They are currently only accepting 10 online reservations a day (but this can change any day).
I waited outside the Tea House for the two of them to walk by me. Once inside the Tea House, he got down on one knee. She was obviously excited and happy and eagerly wanted to see the ring. He put it on her finger and then he pointed out that I was there – she hadn’t noticed 🙂
We walked around different areas of the gardens, wanting to utilize Vizcaya’s unique architecture and design. It was hot outside but so worth it! I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of photographing at Vizcaya. If there is one benefit to these crazy times during the coronavirus pandemic, the gardens were pretty empty, especially for a weekend.
Vizcaya has temporarily suspended walk-in photo permits, but things are changing so quickly these days so be sure to familiarize yourself with their rules and opening times before going there.
Joe wanted to propose to his girlfriend at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. They are both from England and were in town for the Superbowl LIV in Miami. He sent me the signed permit and fees in advance, a requirement to photograph in the gardens at Vizcaya. I sent him a map and directions of where to go when he got there. He also sent me a photo of the two of them and what they’d be wearing that day so I’d know who to look for.
It was a relatively quiet morning at Vizcaya, most likely due to the events occurring in South Beach during the Superbowl. While waiting on a bench outside of the Tea House, I spotted them both from a distance near the water. He walked with Emma into the Tea House and taking advantage of having the place all to themselves, he quickly got down on one knee. He sweetly took her hand and kissed it and asked her to marry him. After placing the ring on her finger and embracing, he pointed in my direction. Love those photos showing their excited and shocked expressions!
We then spent the remainder of the hour walking to some of my favorite spots in Vizcaya. I even discovered a new area that was empty of people and had gorgeous light streaming in. Some areas of Vizcaya can have mosquitoes depending on the time of year, so mosquito repellent is a good thing to have just in case.
I had such a blast working with these two! If you are interested in booking a surprise proposal, engagement or a just-because couples photo shoot, contact me here. You can also send an email to email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
One early Saturday morning, I waited for this couple to arrive at the Tea House in Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. I spotted them from a distance as I sat on a bench just outside the Tea House (a structure located next to the water behind the museum). Elegantly dressed, they walked hand in hand, descending a few steps into the house. He got down on one knee, perfectly framed by the archway, and handed her a red rose. They kissed passionately and then he placed the ring on her finger. We spent the remainder of our time photographing in some other areas of the garden.

Vizcaya charges a photography permit fee to photograph in the gardens (photography is not permitted inside the museum). I can help you plan a Vizcaya proposal or family/couple photo session. Three romantic surprise proposals ideas in Miami
South Pointe Park on the beach. Sunrise is a much quieter time. Sunset is beautiful too but the beach could be very busy depending on the time of year. Alternatives to the beach could be: the rocky pier (best at sunset), one of the rocks by the water, by the palm trees and water on the west side of the park. I always send photos and directions in advance so you’ll know where to go when you get there!
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens: in the Tea House or on the second floor of the gardens there’s a beautiful structure that makes for a perfect place to propose in front of.
