Family Lifestyle Photographer: Miami Beach Sunset Session

There are lots of photography classifications floating around: documentary photographer, photo journalist, lifestyle photographer. When I heard of the term lifestyle photographer, I wasn’t sure what exactly that meant. It wasn’t exactly a term utilized in university when studying fine art photography. You’ll find different definitions, and I’ll quote this one from wix.com:

“Lifestyle photography is a style of portrait photography that aims to capture real-life situations in an artistic manner. The purpose of this type of photography is to share people’s stories through candid, unstaged scenes.”

While every photo session is a little different depending on the ages of the kids and the dynamic of the family, this one was one I would classify as lifestyle photography. While very few photos were actually posed (it’s always nice to have at least one family portrait with everyone looking at the camera), the majority was spent capturing this family exactly as they are. Spurred on by the kids who did not just want to look at the camera and smile, the parents actively engaged the kids by playing with them. This meant chasing them, tossing them in the air, and lifting them up as the waves crashed ashore.

It was a beautiful evening, one that left me with the feeling like these are the memories that will mean the most as time passes. I know with my own nieces and nephews when I look back at photos from just 5 years ago, and I have completely forgotten about how they looked or what life was like back then – but the photos conjure up those memories for us again, allowing us the opportunity to re-engage with those fleeting, precious moments. I wish I had more real-life photos like these with my parents from when I was young. Aren’t they just as special, if not more-so, than the staged ones?
