Family Photo Session Grand Beach Hotel Surfside

I photographed this family of four, with two adorable boys, at the beach behind the Grand Beach Hotel Surfside. It has beautiful sandy pathways lined with beach grass and tropical trees so there are different areas to photograph at. We started photographing in front of a tropical-looking Sea Grape tree which was perfect shade until the sun would dip a little lower. I like to start with a family portrait and then take individual photos of each parent and child (trust me, these make for very treasured photos later in life!).

You can’t expect kids to look at the camera for an entire hour – and I wouldn’t want them to! So what I like to focus on afterwards are more in-the-moment candid style photos where you can play with your kids and also let them run around for a little while. You can throw them in the air, tickle them, and just love on them – lots of hugs, cuddling and doting on them. If they end up crying or cranky for part of the time, I capture that too! All these moments with your kids are fleeting, and I think even the messy moments are beautiful too –  with tears running down their cheeks, while you are there to comfort them. I want to capture all of it.

For this Family Photo Session Grand Beach Hotel Surfside, we met up before sunset. The best time for a beach session is either after sunrise or 1-2 hours before sunset. Fort Lauderdale Family Photography Sunrise Beach Session

I photographed this family four years ago. I remember that day distinctly: it was overcast and drizzling before the session began. I thought we might have to postpone it, but they were determined to make it happen! The rain stopped just as the session began. They contacted me now wanting to schedule another photo session – this time with their first grandchild, an adorable baby girl.

Their boys looked older and more grown-up, the inevitable effect of time. This time so much of the focus was on the baby, who everyone is completely enamored with. We met on the beach in Fort Lauderdale behind their hotel, the Marriott Fort Lauderdale Harbor Beach Resort and Spa.

It was a special session for me being able to photograph their family, their closeness and warmth, and documenting the addition of their first granddaughter.

See their first photo session that took place at South Pointe Park in Miami Beach. Check out all of the family photo sessions on the blog. Vizcaya Couple Photography Session

I met this really sweet couple from Montreal, Canada (my place of birth!) at the beautiful Vizcaya Museum and Gardens located in Miami, Florida. (Side story: as a kid, my family would take a road trip all the way from Miami to Montreal every summer to visit my grandparents. I have so many wonderful memories from there but haven’t been back in years. The first time I ever saw snow was in Montreal, and I was absolutely enamored as you can imagine coming from South Florida. Would love to go back one day!) The photo session was in celebration of his wife’s birthday. We went there in the morning on a weekday and we had the place mostly to ourselves which was nice. It can get really packed there on weekends, especially in the afternoon (although you can always find a beautiful background to photograph at). Its quite picturesque and I always love the opportunity to photograph there. I loved working with these two, the session went by super fast!

You can see all the photo sessions at Vizcaya here. They do charge a permit fee to photograph, but I think its a very worthwhile splurge! Do be aware though that the permit fee does not include entrance into the museum.

If you’re planning your own Vizcaya couple photography session, I suggest wearing elegant or casual-chic attire. If you choose to wear heels, you’ll probably want to bring along casual footwear for walking around from place to place. You can also bring along another pair of outfits to change into mid-session for a different look. If you tend to sweat a lot, consider wearing an absorbent undershirt and breathable clothing. If you need ideas on clothing attire for a couples photo session in Miami, check out the Pinterest Board. Complimentary outfits usually photographs really well.
