The Plan: Evan originally planned on proposing to Alex on the dock before getting onto the boat. I had scoped the area in advance and had been in touch with Evan as to exactly which boat it was so I knew where to stand. After proposing, they would go on a 3 or 4 hour boat ride around Miami.

How It Went Down: I arrived at the marina in Brickell next to the Four Ambassadors a little early and after speaking with the boat captain, he suggested that Evan propose on the boat itself instead of the dock. It was a Catamaran and there was a small flat area where he would be able to get on one knee. He got in touch with Evan who agreed to the new plan. I was going to pretend to be the captain’s first mate so she wouldn’t be suspicious.

I took off my shoes and socks, rolled up my jeans and discreetly placed my camera bag on the side. Alex and Evan arrived, and just as we planned, the captain introduced himself and then introduced me as his first mate. Evan had the captain hook his phone up through bluetooth so he could begin playing one of their favorite songs, Frankie Valli’s Can’t take my eyes off of you, from one of her favorite movies, 10 Things I Hate About You (see the Youtube clip of Heath Ledger singing the song to Julia Stiles). Evan got down on one knee to Alex’s complete shock – she had no idea. She said yes, and he placed the ring on her finger.

We took off on the boat for 20 minutes or so to get some photos out on the water, and then came back to shore to drop me off so they could continue on their boat ride. It was an amazing moment to capture and I’m so grateful I was able to witness and document their special day!

The plan: He wanted to propose at the Cape Florida Lighthouse in the early morning. The lighthouse is located at the southern end of Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. While the lighthouse itself usually opens at 9am, the state park opens at 8am so getting to the lighthouse earlier isn’t a problem. We arranged to meet at 8:30am. Cell phone reception in the park can be a little sketchy depending on the area, so everything had to be perfectly planned. I sent him a map showing him exactly where to get dropped off at and which path to take to get to the beach.

How it went down: I arrived early and found a good spot where I could capture the proposal safely from a distance and also get the lighthouse in the background. I saw them walking onto the beach and knew immediately it was them (he sent me a photo of the two of them beforehand and told me what they would be wearing). I followed them as they walked toward the lighthouse, and then captured the proposal and her excitement afterwards.

We spent the remainder of the beautiful morning exploring the area around the lighthouse. The light was spectacular but more importantly the two of them were so sweet and adorable together. I love the way they would look at each other, completely enamored, and the way he easily made her break out in laughter.

Nautilus South Beach Engagement Photo Session at Sunrise

Nautilus South Beach Engagement Photo Session at Sunrise

Oh, these two. Jade contacted me about wanting to set up an engagement photo session over Labor day weekend. I was glad she chose a sunrise session because it was a weekend and especially on a holiday, it can be extremely packed with people. They told me they weren’t very photogenic (I hear this so many times!) but I can say they proved me wrong 🙂 Really, though, if you just show your love for your partner (or your kids) during the session – these make for the very best pictures.

Jade & Nick were just so sweet together and very much in love. I loved the little bit of time I got to spend with them.

For this Nautilus South Beach Engagement Photo Session at Sunrise session, we met at the beach behind the Nautilus South Beach Sixty Hotel. I would really only recommend photographing on the beach in this area for sunrise because otherwise it can be hard to not get other people in the photographs. The light can be truly beautiful at either sunrise or sunset.

Need ideas for what to wear to an engagement session? Take a look at this Pinterest board What to wear to a couples photo session. If you plan on a beach session, you’ll probably want to be barefoot. I recommend bringing along a towel and change of clothes in case you put your feet in the water. For hour long sessions, there is enough time if you’d like to change your outfit for a different look.
