The original plan was to meet at South Pointe Park for a photo session. When I left my house it was still sunny outside. The weather was perfect – blue skies with some clouds, no rain in sight. As soon as I got close to the park, it started pouring (typical Miami weather, especially in the summer). The skies were gray and the weather radar showed that it would not be clearing up any time soon. Sometimes after a downpour the sun comes out and you get the most beautiful light before the sun sets. But this evening was a total washout.

We made plans to re-schedule for the following morning at sunrise. Sure, we’d have to wake up at 6am but it was totally worth it! We met again but this time at Allison Park by 64th Street and Collins Avenue (I wouldn’t recommend it at sunset – it’s normally packed, especially on weekends, but at sunrise it was nearly empty). This time, thankfully, the rain stayed away and the sun was out in all its glory.

I started photographing the two of them and after about 10-15 minutes I asked her to face the water. If you’ve read the blog, I’ve done this quite a few times for surprise proposals and so far it’s worked out pretty well! The women think I’m just setting them up for another pose, meanwhile the guy goes down on one knee while she’s completely oblivious! I usually then ask her to turn around and that’s when their expression changes to surprise… She broke out in a smile, put her hands over her face in shock, and said YES!  We continued taking photos afterward and I love the shots we got! So happy for these two 🙂

See all of the surprise proposal sessions on the blog. In a past blog post I briefly mention the  options for capturing a proposal. Contact me to set up a photo session, I’ll help you plan it and answer any questions you might have!

Miami Beach Proposal Photography — she said yes!

“He usually does crazy things”, she said, when I asked if she knew something was up. So no, scheduling a photo session with a photographer in Miami didn’t raise her suspicions. We met up at sunrise at South Pointe Park for a beach photo session. I started off photographing the two of them in various poses, than asked her to face the water. Completely unsuspecting, I asked her to turn around and there he was, on one knee. With the pressure off (it’s always a relief afterward :), we took some more photos in the greenery where the wind was calmer. Loved photographing these two!

Miami Sunrise Engagement Proposal

I smile thinking back to this surprise engagement proposal session. The plan was perfect: he told her we were going to meet up for a photo shoot. She loves taking pictures, so she wasn’t suspecting at all. She also told me later that he’s always surprising her and planning things so this wasn’t out of the ordinary for him.

We were to meet at sunrise on the beach near the South Pointe Pier in Miami Beach. He told me we should start off just taking pictures of the two of them in different poses, then at some point I would set up a pose where she would face the water. After about 15 minutes or so of taking pictures, she nonchalantly was facing the water and fixing her hair. He got down on one knee and she was still facing the water! I don’t know what he said, but she turned around and had the best expression on her face! Completely shocked, surprised, and overcome with emotion, she said yes.

Her surprise instantly transformed into excitement and giddiness. She couldn’t believe it!  We took more photos afterward and of course, a close-up of the ring as well. I am so happy for these two and wish them a lifetime of happiness and love!

I’ve photographed quite a few surprise proposals and they’re one of my favorite types of sessions! It’s a moment you’ll always treasure and her reaction will be priceless! I use natural light so I photograph outdoor engagement proposals. I often meet people either at sunrise or before sunset at the beach when the light is beautiful (not too harsh so you end up squinting).

Some people have chosen to have dinner or drinks beforehand (for example, at Smith & Wollensky which is in South Pointe Park) and then I follow them afterward to a spot we’ve decided on prior to the shoot, such as the beach. You can either not tell her anything and I will follow from a distance and capture the proposal, or you can tell her that you set up a photo session with a photographer in Miami.
