South Beach Surprise Proposal Photographer

It’s hard not to love photographing proposals. Minus the nerves leading up to the session, it’s one of the joys in life I get to document. Here’s how this one went down:

The plan: South Pointe Park and the beach had opened up during the coronavirus pandemic. The plan was for us to meet at the park, I’d follow them from a distance, and he’d propose by the water.

How it went down: Ben sent me a photo beforehand of the two of them so I knew who to look for, and told me what they’d be wearing. I was looking for a woman wearing a turquoise dress when I checked my email just before the session was about to start and saw a photo that said: change of outfit! So I was no longer looking for a turquoise dress any more but pink shorts and a white top haha.

I then received a phone call from him and he said: change of plans! They were eating some appetizers at Smith & Wollensky and instead of me following them, he would introduce me as a photographer that would take some photos of them before sunset (he’s done this before with her so she didn’t view it suspiciously). I met the two of them without any handshakes (times have changed quickly during this pandemic!) and we walked down the pathway to the beach.

Once we got to the water, they posed for the camera and then… he turned to her, took her hands in his, and got down on one knee. To say she was surprised is an understatement. She was completely taken back, joyous, happy… all the feels. I loved capturing her many facial reactions! These two are just ridiculously adorable and so in love. Feel lucky to have been there to witness and document this time in their lives.

Joe wanted to propose to his girlfriend at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. They are both from England and were in town for the Superbowl LIV in Miami. He sent me the signed permit and fees in advance, a requirement to photograph in the gardens at Vizcaya. I sent him a map and directions of where to go when he got there. He also sent me a photo of the two of them and what they’d be wearing that day so I’d know who to look for.

It was a relatively quiet morning at Vizcaya, most likely due to the events occurring in South Beach during the Superbowl. While waiting on a bench outside of the Tea House, I spotted them both from a distance near the water. He walked with Emma into the Tea House and taking advantage of having the place all to themselves, he quickly got down on one knee. He sweetly took her hand and kissed it and asked her to marry him. After placing the ring on her finger and embracing, he pointed in my direction. Love those photos showing their excited and shocked expressions!

We then spent the remainder of the hour walking to some of my favorite spots in Vizcaya. I even discovered a new area that was empty of people and had gorgeous light streaming in. Some areas of Vizcaya can have mosquitoes depending on the time of year, so mosquito repellent is a good thing to have just in case.

I had such a blast working with these two! If you are interested in booking a surprise proposal, engagement or a just-because couples photo shoot, contact me here. You can also send an email to info@tovaphotography.com or tovaphotography@gmail.com.

Z Ocean Hotel South Beach Rooftop Proposal

The Plan: Ryan wanted to propose to his girlfriend on the rooftop of the Z Ocean Hotel South Beach. His idea was to for me to start out photographing the entire family, take some individual photos of his 1 year old daughter, and then some of just him and his girlfriend. I would then take some solo shots of his girlfriend. For one photo, I would tell her to look out over the balcony which would be his cue to get into place on one knee behind her. I would then tell her to turn around and he’d pop the question.

How it went down: The rooms at the Z Ocean Hotel have their own rooftop space. So I met them in their suite and we walked out directly to the rooftop. I photographed them and their very adorable little girl. They put her in a crib with a toy and she watched as I photographed her parents together. I told Sam to face the water and Ryan got down on one knee behind her, with his hands holding the open ring box in front of him. When I told her to turn around, she saw Ryan and was in complete shock. She covered her mouth with her hands, getting emotional as Ryan asked her to marry him. She said yes!! He put the ring on her, they embraced and we took a few more photos as the sun was setting.

Sam said she usually knows exactly what Ryan is up to, but she literally had no idea! He built up this idea of getting family photos taken, so she really had no idea he was actually planning a surprise proposal. He left me this review after the session:

“Tova did an amazing job helping me surprise my fiancée with a proposal photo shoot, she was also great with my 1 year old daughter & was able to keep her smiling for pictures which is no easy task.”
